Pita Pizza

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

These Greek inspired pita pizzas are quick and easy, making them a healthy and delicious weeknight meal. Have dinner on the table in under 30 minutes!

It’s no surprise that my family loves pizza. From the classic pizza to pizza casseroles, it’s one of the most requested meals in our house. These Greek inspired flavors puts a Mediterranean twist on pizza night.

Pitas are the prefect size for individual pizzas. So there will be no fighting over the bigger slice! The best part is that they are so simple to make and you can have lunch or dinner made in under 30 minutes! Just because this is a quick meal doesn’t mean that it lacks flavor. The spice blend of cumin, oregano, and cinnamon takes boring ground beef to another level.

Tidbits

Meat– I use lean ground beef for my pita pizzas, however, ground turkey or lamb would be great options too!
Pitas– Splitting the pitas in half helps create a thin crispy “crust” for these pizzas. It is important that you get the pitas with the pockets, NOT the pocket-less ones. To split the pitas, I take a serrated knife around the edges of the pitas to create two rounds.
Hummus– The hummus is used as the “sauce” for these pizzas. You can use any flavor you prefer. Our favorites are the roasted red pepper and the jalapeno hummus.
Toppings– Get creative with the additional toppings. Although it is good as is, we LOVE it with homemade tzatziki. It helps brighten up the dish and pairs well with the meat and hummus. Feta cheese and Kalamata olives are also great options if you want to add more Greek flavors to your pita pizza.

Servings 8 Pita Pizzas

Ingredients

  • 4 pitas NOT the pocket-less pitas
  • ½ tablespoon avocado oil or olive oil
  • ½ yellow onion diced
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 2 ½ teaspoons cumin
  • 1 ½ teaspoons dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon dried basil
  • ground pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 roma tomatoes diced, divided
  • ¼ cup fresh cilantro chopped, divided
  • 1 cup hummus any flavor

Toppings (Optional)

  • Tzatziki
  • Feta Cheese
  • Kalamata Olives
  • Sliced Red Onions
  • Cucumber

Instructions

  • Set the oven to broil. Split each pita into 2 rounds. *See Tidbits section above for photos. Place pitas on a baking sheet. Broil each side for 1-2 minutes, until each side is crisp and golden brown. Be careful as they can brown very quickly. Set pitas aside.
  • In a large skillet, heat oil on medium heat. Add onion and sauté until onions become translucent, about 2 minutes.
  • Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add ground beef and cook until browned. Breaking it up into pieces as it cooks, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Add cumin, oregano, salt, cinnamon, basil, and pepper. Mix until beef mixture is fully coated.
  • Add the lemon juice and half of the tomatoes and cilantro (reserving the other half for topping the pitas). Stir to combine and simmer for 3 minutes, until the tomatoes begin to soften and the lemon juice has been absorbed. Remove skillet from heat.
  • Spread each pita round with hummus then top with meat mixture.
  • Top pitas with the reserved fresh tomatoes and cilantro. Add your favorite toppings; tzatziki, feta, olives etc.

Notes

Ground turkey or lamb can be used in place of the ground beef.
